SAFETY BRIEF: ALCOHOL AND DRUGS

Workers with alcohol problems are 2.7 times more likely than workers without alcohol problems to have injury-related absences. The use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace increases the risk of accidents and fatalities and can lead to lost productivity, health issues and absenteeism.

SIGNS OF ALCOHOL OR DRUG ABUSE ON THE JOB

  • Poor work performance
  • Missing work, calling in sick or showing up late frequently
  • Frequently changing jobs
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Unusual behavior
  • Glassy eyes

Watching a coworker struggle with a drug or alcohol issue can be difficult. The best thing you can do is talk to your supervisor if you suspect someone is under the influence of drugs or alcohol at your workplace. By choosing to report a coworker, you are reducing the likelihood of an accident or fatality. If you feel that you have a substance abuse problem, talk to your supervisor and seek help.
